As a pet photographer in Chicago, I have photographed indoors and outdoors. I always wait for moments when the dog or cat is in their most natural state of calm and happiness. This is the absolute only way I will photograph them. Otherwise they look stunned and nervous which is not acceptable. That is not the memory I want to capture for them to have in years to come. If the moment doesn’t present itself, I ask their human for guidance. Asking many questions about the pets day to day activities is vital to a good photograph. These are the only sessions where I will actually somewhat plan ahead.
Pet photography can certainly be one of the most time consuming sessions. Sometimes I have to earn their trust before I can even pull out my camera. I do many things to become their pal which includes anywhere from chatting on the couch with them to bribing them with treats or toys. This has earned more respect from me than I could have ever imagined because I have learned that they are absolutely not fools. They feed on your energy in a way that I will always admire. Occasionally it is more beneficial to take them out of their home environment because they let their guard down and are in a sense, “off duty”. My goal is to find the moments with their human companions that show the love, respect, and bond the have. Pets have proven to challenge me the most when it comes to capturing the most organic and honest moments. I owe much of this knowledge to my wife who is a licensed veterinary technician and has worked with animals for over 16 years.
